Rise of the Roman Republic-Formation and Struggles of the Orders
The Roman Republic was formed to create a community where the citizens could elect their rulers. The patricians were wealthy Latin nobles, who created the republic. These aristocrats drove out the previously ruling Etruscan rulers. The republic was organized and predominantly ruled by the patricians. The common people of Rome or the Plebeians knew that there must be representatives from the poorer classes as well.
The plebeians refused to fight in the army until their demands were met. As the unrest grew the common people decided that they would succeed from the Roman Empire unless their demands were met. Afraid of the large loss from the military the patricians gave in to the plebeians. Although the patricians still had almost full control, the plebeians gained the right to have two tribunes or representatives. Social standings of the plebeians were improved and the twelve tables were created to produce more equality. This unrest was also called the Struggle of the Orders.
